Palawan vs Boracay

The big dilemma is whether to go to Palawan or Boracay. Here is why you should choose Palawan for your next vacation.
Before we get started we should preface this article by mentioning that this opinion is entirely our own.

Obviously we are quite biased as we live on and love our home on Palawan. Although, Boracay is great too, we think Palawan is better.

Palawan is, for the second time, declared as “The Best Island in the World” recently due to its exquisite beauty, exceptional biodiversity that is rich with various species that are included in its flora and fauna which are mostly endemic to the province. Years back, before Palawan’s Underground River was voted as one of the 7 Wonders of Nature, Palawan was dubbed as the Philippines’ “Last Frontier” for its impressive environmental state – green forests, crystal clear waters, rich flora and fauna – a paradise!

Even before it gained the fame that it has now due to the PuertoPrincesa Underground River, Palawan have become one of the most visited places by tourists because of its natural beauty. Aside from the Underground River that is already being regularly visited by tourists, the Municipality of El Nido which is found in the northern part of the province became a major tourist destination as well due to its islands, white sands, coral reefs, lovely beaches, and crystaline water.

However, despite the beauty of Palawan back then, it had always stayed in the sidelines of the Philippines’ growing roster of beaches mainly because of Boracay which became one of the major summer destinations of locals – even celebrities – because of its fine white sand and the lively night life.

Boracay is a small island in the Philippines that is found in the Municipality of Malay in Aklan, a province that is found in the Western Visayas Region. It is approximately located 315 kilometers south of Manila and 2 kilometers off the northwest tip of Panay Island.

Over the years, Boracay Island and its beaches have been receiving awards from various travel publications and agencies. Boracay is famous for being one of the world’s top destinations for beach holidays and is emerging as one of the top destinations for  Outdoor Activities and Nightlife. The island is administered by the Philippine Tourism Authority and the provincial government of Aklan. Ack in 2012, it was awarded as the “Best Island in the World” – the same award that Palawan have received for two consecutive times recently.

Battle of Greatness

Years later after Palawan have gained more fame due to the Underground River and the many other tourist destinations in the province, people have began comparing Palawan and Boracay. Many would suggest Palawan for a 10 – day vacation instead of Boracay since Palawan – despite the fact that it is an island – has many things to offer to tourists which would entertain their ayes and would definitely satisfy their vacation, making it a memorable and interesting one.

Palawan has many sites to see and wonders to explore. Activities such as diving, snorkeling and many other activities make it more interesting than Boracay that only has few sceneries to offer and only has major highlights during the evening which is quite similar to Palawan’s El Nido. Aside from the set of things that one can do in Boracay, the “relaxation” part have also began to be questioned. Many tourists consider destinations in Palawan such as El Nido, Port Barton and Sabang as faw more relaxing than that of Boracay due to the isolated areas that it has which have become more popular over the years.

Palawan is highly recommended for tourists who want to get that “Filipino” feeling, having a deserted offshore island experience where you get the opportunity to think over things and calm your mind free of all the stress from work or home. If you are after a tranquil and relaxing vacation, come to Palawan! For those who prefers having a closer encounter with nature, Palawan is definitely a great place to go to due to many activities that you can do that would let you to have a high chance of having great natural encounters and be able to get closer to nature like you’ve never been before.

Unlike Palawan, Boracay is more of a paradise for partygoers and is louder when it comes to nightlife. If you prefer a quiet place where you can get the chance to rest and actually relax, Palawan would definitely be a better choice than Boracay.

Compared to Boracay, Palawan has more sceneries and is a perfect spot for photographers and environmentalists since it still has its natural tropical ambiance despite having some rest houses in the area that accommodates tourists who come to the island. Regarding the beaches, Palawan have crystalline beaches that are very ideal for snorkelling, wreck diving and swimming enthusiasts. Boaracay on the other hand have been getting complaints regarding the algae situation in the area that usually happens during the dry season which includes the month of April and May which are the usual vacation months in the Philippines. Another growing concern is the cleanliness of Boracay. With very active tourism over the previous years,

Boracay and its handlers failed to see through the areas cleanliness thoroughly and found it too late that Boracay have slowly become less accommodating for visitors who want to enjoy the white sand beach tat it has due to the garbage situation that it has in its shores. Palawan on the other hand has very few concerns regarding cleanliness since the government in the province itself is making great efforts in maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the area, along with the help of Non-Government Organizations who are advocates of nature and is on full support on the conservation of Palawan’s biodiversity.

To Sum it All up

Palawan and Boracay are two different islands which has different things to offer and is ideal to anyone depending on what kind of vacation they want to experience. However, Palawan has become more frequently recommended and chosen because of it’s unspoiled beauty that was managed to be kept over the years depite the continuous utilization of it for tourism industry unlike Boracay which have gained more disadvantageous points over the past years.

Boracay have become a choice to go to for those who are after the nightlife – the partying, the drinking, and the ground shaking music. Palawan on the other hand is chosen for its ambiance that is very ideal for those who wants to escape the busy city life and the stressful working days. If you’re the kind of traveller who likes tranquility and relaxation during vacations and trips, Palawan would definitely be the best choice, indeed, nightlife is necessary and it is also present in Palawan, but unlike Boracay, Palawan has relaxing spots where you may isolate yourself if you do not feel like hanging out and socializing with other tourists, vacations are meant for relaxation after all.

You would also want to go to Palawan if you want intimate times with loved ones or during honeymoons to be able to have more time with the people you are with and enjoy activities together without the hassle of being surrounded by many people since Palawan has lots of destinations which divides the numbers of tourists – making other destinations less crowded than the others. If you end up getting tired of swimming, you may opt to explore the lush jugle that is filled with thousand year old trees and many fauna species who are endemic to Palawan, you may also prefer kayaking through mangrove forests and try the tamilok, or try to get in some ancient caves in the vicinity.

Unlike in Boracay where the only things you can do is go swimming and party at night, Palawan has a wider variety when it comes to the activities that you may do during your stay in whichever destination you want to go to. People who are looking for a tranquil and a peaceful time with their loved ones while enjoying the wondrous beauty of mother nature would definitely enjoy more in Palawan than in Boracay.
